In 1936 maybe 3 or 4 people started writing about Gravitational Lensing. It was discovered in 1979 that the idea was provable. A man who ate enough doughnuts ( and increased his mass to that of a black hole) could get between earth and a distant galaxy and bend the light emitting from that galaxy into multiple images. Here is an illustration of how that works:
